2020 APP World Tour season announced as 2019 ends on a high with spectacular action

After a spectacular 2019 season that saw dramatic action across every event on Tour, the APP is continuing its legacy in Osaka and Paris, while adding a new World Tour Opener on the northwest coast of France (Pornichet), and delivering dedicated downwind and dedicated surf sprint events to complete the 2020 line up:


The City Paddle Festivals concept will be continued in 2020 with our flagship events in Osaka and Paris, continuing on the legacy of weekend festivals to celebrate the sport, mass participation and pro spectacle in major global Cities.


New for 2020 is the World Tour Opener in Pornichet, France: working with our partners in France to strengthen the sport from the ground up, the Pornichet event will provide a great seaside venue that celebrates community and participation, as well as showcasing the World's best in action in this unique venue in the Tour line up.


Also new for 2020 will be the downwind stop on Tour, something that the APP felt was missing in 2019, and will be celebrated this coming year with an all new stop in North America. With exact date and location to be finalized over the coming month, the APP has identified the window and are working with several host venues to finalize before officially announcing early in the New Year.


The final element to be added is the Gran Canaria Surf Sprints: to be held in conjunction with the amazing World Championship Tour Surfing Final in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Surf Sprints will complete the 'all-terrain' approach the APP is committed to deliver in 2020 to ensure the most well rounded Champions are crowned at the end of the season in Paris.


Here is the schedule for Racing:

  1. 25th - 28th June: Pornichet, France (Distance & Sprints)

  2. 13th - 18th July: Maui, Hawaii (Downwind Special)

  3. 25th - 27th September:  Osaka, Japan (Distance & Sprints)

  4. 27th - 29th November: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Surf Sprints)

  5. 4th - 6th December: Paris, France (Distance & Sprints)

For 2020, we will have a break from the traditional pilgrimage to Sunset Beach on Oahu's North Shore to provide a real off season this year and allow us to build up to what will be an incredible 2020 season with World Class venues to challenge the World's very best athletes:


We are proud to confirm that the first stop of the 2020 season will now be Portugal, running during prime surf season in this surfing Mecca to deliver a dramatic World Tour Opener from the 4th - 10th October.


This is an exciting new addition to the tour and will build on the performance focus that the APP has been delivering over the past few years and complement the other 2 stops for 2020 to provide a balanced and highly competitive line-up to challenge the world's best.


The APP World Tour will then return to Barbados in 2020, after its epic first edition there in 2019, where the venue fast became an athlete and fan favorite, before wrapping with the Gran Canaria Pro-Am.


2020 will be the 3rd consecutive year of crowning World Champions in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as we look towards the next 3 years as a minimum committed to this World Class venue.


Despite this break from Sunset Beach in 2020, the APP World Tour will return to Sunset Beach from the 11th - 23rd February 2021 as we continue to evolve globally, but maintain our roots in the Hawaiian Islands and continue the Tour's rich 10 year legacy.

  1. Portugal: 4th - 10th October

  2. Barbados: 10th - 15th November

  3. Gran Canaria: 24th November - 1st December
