Full & Official details on the 2020 APP World Tour Racing Schedule

Welcome to the 2020 APP Racing World Tour!

Introduction:

This year’s Tour will consist of 5 events:

1. Pornichet, France: 25th – 28th June

• Sprint & Distance Racing

• Open Lifestyle Festival with participation opportunities for all

2. Maui, Hawaii: 13th – 18th July

• Downwind Special Event (single discipline event)

• Holding period to allow for the best possible downwind conditions

• Up to athletes best 3 runs will count towards the overall Event Title (conditions allowing)

• Open Foiling Championship run during the week

3. Osaka, Japan: 25th – 27th September

• Sprint & Distance Racing

• Open Lifestyle Festival with participation opportunities for all

4. Gran Canaria, Spain: 27th – 29th November

• Surf Sprint Racing (single discipline event)

• Middle weekend of the 2020 APP World Tour Surfing Event

• Inflatable World Games and other mass participation opportunitie

5. Paris, France: 4th – 6th December

• Indoor Sprint Racing

• Famous Distance Race down the River Seine

• Nautic Boat Show with Festival entertainment and mass participation event as the biggest event of the year

As it stands, the overall result for the 2020 season will be made up from the 4 distance and 4 sprint results, with the venues providing an ideal mixture of flat water, downwind, surf and pool conditions to determine the very best racers in the World.

However, the APP is currently evaluating a discard system for 2020, with communication already underway with athletes and a decision to be taken in February to determine whether a discard will be applicable for this 2020 season.

The emphasis will still be on the Overall World Title, although as with the 2019 season, the APP will celebrate both Sprint and Distance Champions for their performances across each discipline at the end of the 2020 season.

2020 Qualified Athletes

You will see below the structure for qualification for the 2020 APP World Tour as announced in early 2019:

1. The Elite APP World Tour Professional field for Men will consist of 32 athletes made up of the following:

• Top 20 Men from 2019

• Top 5 from the US Cup

• Top 3 from major European Races

• Top seed from South America & Asia Races

• 2 Wildcards per event

2. The Elite APP World Tour Professional field for Women will consist of 20 athletes* made up of the following:

• Top 10 Women from 2019

• Top 3 from the US Cup

• Top 3 from major European Races

• Top seed from South America & Asia Races

• 2 Wildcards per event

* This field size can be increased based on demand from qualified Women

2. We are introducing a Qualifying Series through all 5 of the APP World Tour Events in 2020, coupled with opportunities through the established US Cup and select major European Races – full details for 2021 qualification to be announced over the coming 30 – 60 days. The goal is to solidify a legitimate qualification process that can provide real structure for the sport for years to come, and a pathway to a place on the APP World Championship Tour.

Entry process:

1. Qualified Athletes will have until April 1st to commit to the Tour for the year and all athletes should communicate directly with the APP to confirm entry and participation at athletes@appworldtour.com

2. Wildcard requests can be submitted now to athletes@appworldtour.com

3. Pro-Am and Amateur entries to be open soon

Board Carriage:

We have spent a lot of time this month researching options for board carriage for the 2020 season and this is the situation. We have sourced the option of a single container carrying boards on the following route:

• The container will be loaded in Pornichet

• It will be shipped directly to Osaka

• From Osaka, it will go directly to Gran Canaria

• It will then leave from Gran Canaria and end up in Paris

*Maui is not included in this shipment, as there is not enough time between Pornichet and Maui to make a shipment work – we also considered that likely Maui would be a different kind of board from the other venues, so it would be a different board from the regular shipment. That being said, we are waiting on some air freight subsidies to be able to present options for those that need them.

Pre-qualified athletes for the 2020 Tour

Below we have laid out the final list of athletes who are pre-qualified for the APP World Tour in 2020. If someone is not going to take part, then their place will be given to the next in line on the Wildcard shortlist / according to the rankings for 2020 and anyone wanting to be considered for a wildcard that is not listed below, should email the APP directly at: athletes@appworldtour.com
